Nelda Newsome was born in Suwannee County, Florida, on August 29, 1925. She was educated at Lee High School in Jacksonville, St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing, Stetson University (B.A.), and the University of Florida (M.Ed.). Nelda was a teacher in the Putnam County public schools for 28 years. She taught 2nd grade at Silver Lake Elementary School, she founded and directed the Reading Lab at Palatka Middle School, and she taught 4th grade at Mellon Elementary School until her retirement in 1991. Nelda was the wife of the Rev. William T. Newsome, who pastored churches and taught in Putnam County public schools for 28 years prior to his death in 2003. Nelda was a devoted wife, mother and teacher, and a life-long follower of Christ. Nelda died at her home in Deland on January 28, 2013. She is survived by her three sons, Robert Newsome of Deland, John Newsome of Bradenton, and William Newsome of Woodside, CA; one brother, Henry G. Helton of Live Oak, Fl, four grandchildren, Jonathan Newsome, David Newsome, Amy Newsome and Daniel Newsome. Bob, John and Bill are unspeakably grateful for Nelda’’s life and for her love and devotion to her family. She will be missed. Grave side services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 1st at O’Brien Cemetery in O’Brien , Fl with Rev. Neil Helton officiating.
