Fred Lee Moses was born June 29, 1936, in Mayo, Florida, and peacefully passed away at his home located on the same land his family has farmed for generations on February 13, 2023.

Fred was proud of his farming heritage.  He, along with his family, strived to make their farm successful.  Over the years they grew tobacco, peanuts, watermelons, hay, and silage.  They also raised hogs, sheep, beef, and dairy cattle.  In 1974, the Florida Farm Bureau named Fred's family the Florida Farm Family of the year.  Later, Fred delighted in passing along his farming knowledge to his grandchildren. He took them to the hog market and taught them how to drive and repair tractors, how to bottle-feed calves, and how to make homemade smoked sausage. In addition to his family members, Fred inspired innumerable young people who worked with him on the farm throughout the years, each of who can attest to his upright character and work ethic.

But Fred was so much more than just a farmer.  To those that knew him, he was something of a renaissance man.  He could play a tune on the piano and painted a few landscapes while recovering from a farming accident.  Fred was a member of the Masonic Lodge.  He trained border collies and competed in dog trials throughout the Southeast.  Fred's grandchildren all have fond memories of piling into a travel trailer with their Grandmama and Papa to watch and "help" at the competitions.  Fred was also a gifted builder and tinkerer.  So many things around the farm were hand-built or restored by him including his home, farrowing house, dairy barn, tractors, plows, cornmeal grinder, wagons, and various farm implements.  And Fred was generous with his gifts. He was always willing to teach someone who was willing to learn and to help out a neighbor in need.

Fred's generous spirit was fostered at Mt. Paran Baptist church where he was a lifelong member.  Fred was a deacon of the church his entire adult life and helped teach the adult bible study for many years.  Fred helped spread his faith throughout the world as a member of the Gideons International.  He also ensured his children, grandchildren, great and great-great-grandchildren had a church home.

Fred is survived by Betty Moses, his wife and life partner for the last 66 years.  Their love and devotion to each other set an example for all to follow.  Fred is also survived by his children, Freda (Mike) Shaw, and Randall (Beverly) Moses; grandchildren Keith (Melissa) Shaw, Kyle (Darby) Shaw, Keri (Tyler) Dykes, Kody (Madison) Shaw, Justin Moses, Malynn (Alec) Livingston, Megan Moses, Trey (Mary) Jackson, and Leah (Derek) Fillyaw; great-grandchildren Michaela (Jerrett) Kandzer, Kaypers Shaw, Tucker Shaw, Emerson Shaw, Ellery Dykes, Ethan Dykes, Wade Shaw, Worth Shaw, Nathan Livingston, Rylan Fillyaw, and Kylie Fillyaw; and, one great-great-grandchild, Caroline Kandzer.  Fred was pre-deceased by his parents, Clarence and Grace E. Moses, and siblings, Mitchel Moses, Raymond (Estelle) Johnston, Ralph (Mary) Johnston, Dave (Scottie) Johnston, Robert (Bess) Johnston, and Carol (Mike) Ashton.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 17, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Paran Baptist Church.  Interment services will follow immediately afterward at Maypop Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family at 10:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, those who wish may send a memorial donation to Mt.
