Judy Lee Smales, 72, passed away on August 13, 2026.

Born on May 9, 1954, Judy lived a life marked by warmth, resilience, and deep devotion to the people and faith that meant the most to her. She served in the United States Navy from 1973 to 1976, and it was during her time in the Navy that she met her husband, Richard Smales, Sr. In 1989, she moved to Jasper from Ohio, where she made her home and built a life centered on family. A homemaker, Judy gave her heart to caring for those she loved.

Judy was a true people person. She was cheerful, had an infectious personality, and never met a stranger. Her presence brought ease and welcome wherever she went. Even through difficulties in her life, she never complained, choosing instead to meet each day with quiet strength and grace. She enjoyed crafts and crocheting, and she liked watching sports, never hesitating to argue with the television when her favorite players were not performing their best. Above all, Judy loved her family. Her faith in God was the most important part of her life and guided everything she did.

She is survived by her son, Richard Smales, Jr.; her sister, Janet Nofzinger and Janet’s husband, Tom; her nieces, Anita Grove and Angie Newland; her nephews, Dylan Neeley, Geoff Newland, and Alex Newland; and her great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Lillian Newland, Trenton Newland, and Cameron Newland. Each of them carries forward memories of Judy’s cheerful spirit, her open heart, and the love she so freely shared.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Smales, Sr., and by her daughter, Kim Smales.

Judy will be remembered for her kindness, her strong faith, her lively spirit, and the joy she brought to everyday life. Her memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved her.
