Mom was born in Vermont on the 9th of May 1927 and grew up in Hanover New Hampshire; she was one of 9 children. On January 13th, 1945 she married Walter Roy Mathews, Jr., in Lebanon NH, he was the love of her life. Walt served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and she always called him her Sailor Boy. About 2 years after they got married they were blessed with Walter Roy Matthews the 3rd, known to the rest of us as Butch, followed by Joe, Barbara, George (Woody), and Becky. Looking to get out of the snow and a warmer climate, the growing family moved to Florida in 1957, to join her parents Stella and Lewis Carr in the sunshine State, still, there was something missing, Tom arrived and completed the family. In the 60s Walt received the calling for the ministry and like the team they always were, they worked together for his goal, they both worked many different jobs over the years, mom worked in a men's shirt factory in Live Oak FL, guess what all the men in the family got for Christmas that year? In 1967 Walt got his first Parrish in Wellborn FL, Mom made this place a home for her large and boisterous family. Mom did discover her love for nursing and worked in many places in Florida, working full time, having a large family, and being a minister's wife. Around 1987 mom retired from nursing and was able to spend more time with her children and her Sailor Boy. She raised 6 amazing Children, thru the good times and the bad times she was there, helping and supporting her family, she had this amazing talent for looking at a dress and would go home and make it without a pattern, it came in handy in keeping her family dressed and looking sharp. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, including numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, please forgive me if I forgot anyone. In 1993 their next adventure started in the form of an RV, and they did some short trips. Once dad retired from the ministry, they took one year off, to travel the country, and what a year it was. She would talk about all the beautiful places and the memories they made. Including the story of breaking down along the way, waiting under a nearby tree for help, or being stuck and breaking down in the middle of New York City, I can just picture that one lol. Sadly Dad, Becky, and Butch preceded her in death and here we are going full circle, back in Wellborn the place mom called home. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, November 26th at Wellborn United Methodist Church with Rev. David Carr, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Leona Cemetery.
