Kathy Carroll left this world on Sunday, July 2nd 2023.  She died of Glioblastoma, leaving behind a brother, two daughters, a son-in law, two grandchildren, adoring nieces and nephews, devoted dear friends and a capricious dog.

She was born Sara Kathryn Scroggin on April 15th, 1937, the daughter of Gladys and Clyde Scroggin.  She grew up with her older brother Homer in Ocala Florida before going to college at Stetson University.  After graduating, she returned to teach school in Ocala where she met Ellsworth Carroll of Live Oak.  They married in 1961 and welcomed their first daughter in 1962.  After moving to Live Oak, they were delighted by the arrival of their second daughter in 1967.  In 1968, the young family moved to Baton Rouge Louisiana where Ellsworth attended graduate school and Kathy taught elementary school.  They returned to Florida in 1970 where they lived in Jacksonville for seven years before settling in Tallahassee where they lived for twenty-seven years.  Upon retirement, they traveled for several years throughout North America in their motor home before finding a summer home in Vermont at Limehurst Campground where they made lifetime friends.  In 2004, they came back to Live Oak, where they lived surrounded by these friends for the remainder of their lives.

Kathy graduated from Stetson University with a BA in Early Childhood Education in 1959 and later studied Secondary Education and History at Florida State University.  For the first half of her career, she taught elementary school in Ocala, Baton Rouge and Jacksonville.  After moving to Tallahassee, she taught Math and World History at Jefferson High School in Monticello where she served as the faculty sponsor of the Brain Brawl team and chaperoned many school dances.

Kathy began her days early with a two mile walk with her friend, Sandy.    Over the years, she welcomed many pets and people into her home, to stay for dinner or a while longer.   Her home was always clean and devoid of clutter but full of laughter.  She loved to play the piano though it annoyed her husband, watch old movies, though she never watched from the beginning, read, though she sometimes forgot what she read, and cook for her dogs.  She crocheted and made clothes for her daughters and taught them how to love well.   She formed deep friendships and relationships with her nieces and nephews.    She was active in the Live Oak Garden Club and the First Baptist Churches of Tallahassee and Live Oak where she sang in the choir.

She is survived by her brother Homer Scroggin, daughters Sherrie Carroll and Terri Wharff, her son-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey Wharff, and her grandchildren Sara and Michael Wharff and his fiancé Camille Neumann, nieces and nephews, close friends, and her rambunctious Boston Terrier Mick.  She is preceded in death by her husband of almost fifty-nine years, Ellsworth Carroll, and sister-in-law, Marilyn Scroggin.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Live Oak on Friday July 7th 2023 at 3:00 pm preceded by a viewing at 2:00 pm.
