Phil A. Mckenzie's Obituary
Phillip A. McKenzie, 83, O'Brien, FL passed away on 1/10/2023. Phil was born and grew up in the Houston, TX area. After living in many places across the United States, he made his home in O'Brien in 1987.
Phil found his love of flying at a young age and got his pilot's license as a teenager. He became a flight instructor and later became a glider instructor at Clover Field near NASA. In fact, his first glider student was none other than Neil Armstrong.
Phil went on to obtain numerous aircraft pilot ratings from balloons to jets during his flying career. He had over 10,000 hours of flight time. Phil and Sandy even built their own float plane and flew around the country.
Phil was a volunteer at the Sun 'n Fun Aerospace Expo in Lakeland, Fl for several decades. His volunteer jobs included first ultralight chairman, complaint/compliment department, sign painter, campground host, Seaplane host, and assistant in the commercial exhibits area.
Phil was a great natural artist. He loved painting WWII nose art on recovered aluminum from old military airplanes. Later in life, he used his artistic abilities to teach himself to make beautiful stained glass art.
Phil had a unique personality and a wonderful sense of humor, keeping those around him in stitches laughing most of the time. Everyone loved Phil, yet he never understood why.
Phil seemed to know something about everything and how to do just about everything with little to no effort. We never knew where he acquired all of his knowledge, but we greatly benefitted from it.
Phil is survived by his wife of 38 years: Sandy McKenzie; son: Phillip McKenzie, Jr. (Deborah); daughters: Adele Frame and Vicki Bellino (Charlie); brother: Robert McKenzie (Eleanor); grandchildren: Jessica Frame, Theresa Frame, and Victor Bellino.
Phil requested that we not have a formal service, so we will have a casual get-together at a later time.
