It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of, Tom R. Campbell, of Gulf Breeze, FL, who passed away on May 31, 2025, at the age of 74. Tom was a man of rare warmth, wit, and wisdom, whose presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.

For over three decades, Tom dedicated his life to educating and inspiring the next generation of thinkers, dreamers, and doers. As a third-grade teacher at Central School in Wilmette, IL, Tom became a beloved figure to students, parents, and colleagues alike. He had an extraordinary ability to make learning both fun and meaningful. By incorporating creative game shows, original plays, and whimsical songs, all accompanied by his gifted guitar playing — Tom brought an infectious energy into his classroom, creating an environment where every student felt valued, heard, and respected.

A master at connecting with children, Tom had a rare gift of understanding the world from their perspective. He possessed a unique blend of patience, empathy, humor, and grace that made him not just a teacher, but a mentor and a friend to those who entered his classroom. Whether working with special-needs students, English as a Second Language learners, or the rest of the class, Tom effortlessly blended diverse backgrounds into a cohesive, supportive community. He didn't just teach academics; he imparted life lessons, helping his students develop the confidence, resilience, and principles they needed to face the world with integrity.

Upon his retirement, Tom moved to the shores of Gulf Breeze, FL, where he embraced his longtime dream of the laid-back beach lifestyle. There, he spent his time writing songs, composing short stories, and performing at local beach venues. In the early 2000s, he was honored to win the Pensacola Songwriter's Contest, a testament to his creative spirit. He was also a passionate collector of pirate ships and nautical memorabilia, and he devoted many hours to supporting parents who were home-schooling their children.

Tom's love for connection and camaraderie was ever-present, whether he was playing endless rounds of cribbage with friends and family or helping organize reunions for his classmates. As the President of the Senior Class of 1968 at Urbana High School in Urbana, IL, Tom took great pleasure in connecting with his high school  classmates for more than five decades of cherished reunions, serving as the MC, filling the room with his signature humor and warmth.

Tom's life was a testament to the power of kindness, dedication, and the importance of staying true to one's passions. He leaves behind a legacy of light, joy, laughter, and the countless lives he touched, both in and out of the classroom.

Tom is survived by his twin sister, Sue Payton, Colorado Springs, CO, niece, Courtney Callen, Monument, CO, nephews, Raymond Campbell, Versailles, KY and Jasen Campbell, Monroe MI, and countless friends and former students who loved him dearly. A celebration of Tom's remarkable life, a Pirate's send off, will be held at Pensacola Beach, FL this Fall.
